Happy (belated) New Year! As we celebrate the blank slate of a brand new year, I wish all of you good health, lots of happiness, and plenty of great books to read! Reading challenges, which we’ve discussed in previous posts, have become popular with bibliophiles looking to discover new types of books and stretch their reading muscles. Some challenges include Popsugar Reading Challenge , Goodreads Challenge, and Book Riot’s 2018 Read Harder Challenge.
For the first time, we’ve decided to make our own 2018 Levittown Public Library Reading Challenge! Some of the tasks included can be found on other lists, while others are more specific to a library setting. In addition to participating for the fun of discovering new books, your participation can also enter you into a contest to win a $25 gift card! As long as you have a Levittown Public Library card, all you have to do is read at least five different books meeting your choice of the challenge criteria. Don’t want to read a book written 100 years ago? Can’t find a book you like that has a bird on the cover? Not a problem! You can skip the ones that don’t work for you and focus on the types of books that pique your interest.
Brochures with the full challenge checklists and rules are available at the Children’s, Circulation, YA, and Reference desks, as well as through our website. You can keep track with your brochure and ask one of our staff members to stamp the tasks as you complete them. There’s no way for us to know for sure whether you actually read the books, so we’re depending on the honor system and hope you will too. If you like social media and would prefer to go paperless, share your progress on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using #LPLReadingChallenge2018. Post using the hashtag for at least five different books and you’re also in it to win it. And by “win it” I mean: you would join those who turned in their paper challenge brochures and be entered in the raffle to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Children and teens who read at least five of the challenge books will be entered in separate raffles to win a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card and a $25 AMC Theatres gift card, respectively.
The contest ends August 1st, 2018 and we hope it helps motivate you to read during the summer. In fact, all of the challenges–regardless of the age group–contain reading tasks related to music, in keeping with this year’s summer reading theme “Libraries Rock!” As always, librarians are here to help and our catalog can be searched from most departments in the building and from your very own home. Part of the fun is in finding the books and getting to know the library better. We hope you join us for the 2018 Levittown Public Library Challenge.
Happy Reading,
Jess
