Readers, prepare to blast off for another exciting summer of events at the Levittown Public Library! Dedicated summer reading participants will remember that our theme last year was “Build a Better World,” focusing on architecture and altruism. This year, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20th, our slogan is “A Universe of Stories.” Astronomers, star gazers, and space buffs of all ages are in luck! Adults can make a Galaxy Bag on July 25th, teens can make Glow Jars (August 8th), create an Alien Cake (July 24th), and more, while children will experiment with rockets (July 8th), create Star Gazers with help from teen volunteers (July 9th and August 6th), and make food fit for outer space (July 15th), in addition to many other exciting space-themed activities. Drop what you’re doing and consult our jam-packed July/August 2019 newsletter, which includes a long list of other programs, along with registration information and complete program details.
Summer wouldn’t be complete without a healthy dose of summer reading! Vacation loan is now available for Levittown cardholders, giving you a longer loan time, which means you can check out even more books for your next vacation–even if it’s just a staycation. (For those of you lucky travelers venturing out of the country, did you know that you can get a passport through the Levittown Public Library, including the photo? Call our Circulation Desk to make an appointment). Readers (and pre-readers!) of all ages can join one of our summer reading programs. Not only do these programs help to keep you accountable and encourage you to read, but they also provide you with prizes along the way and opportunities to participate in end-of-summer celebrations! Registration and reporting for all programs are super simple and those who are interested should contact the Library for more information or check out that handy link to the aforementioned July/August newsletter. Teens and children in the Levittown School District who have required reading for the summer can use those books toward our summer reading logs. Moreover, we will again be collaborating with the school district by providing registration for their Summer Reading Extravaganzas. This year’s Extravaganzas will be held at Levittown Memorial Education Center due to our upcoming building renovations. That’s right–our building is getting a makeover! Over the next few months, our Community Room, restrooms, parking lot, and windows will be updated to become more inclusive, welcoming, modern, and user-friendly. The renovation of our Children’s Room has already been completed; stop by to see the incredible transformation! Despite these projects, we will continue to provide you with quality service, materials, and programs with as little disruption as possible.
Finally, you have the opportunity this summer to join in the first ever Nassau County Library Tour. Over 50 libraries across Nassau County are participating in this bookish scavenger hunt. You can pick up a map and hop from library to library. Each library has a unique item for you to find; the LPL’s special item is our newest team members, Kevin the Robot. The more libraries you visit, the more prizes you will earn. Levittown is a prize center, making it especially convenient for our local residents. While you’re touring the county, you can learn more about our neighboring libraries and explore the many beautiful and diverse communities across Long Island.
We look forward to seeing you this summer as you explore the “universe of stories” the Library has to offer.
Happy Reading,
Jess
